Posted - 16/05/2008 : 10:39:59 The Games and Amusements Board will come out with a month-long suspension for 10 cue artists who participated two weeks ago in a tournament not sanctioned by the government regulating body for professional sport. GAB Chairman Eric Buhain yesterday said the players’ continued defiance to the agency’s order is tantamount to waiving their rights to due process, thus, they will be reprimanded. The GAB is expected to announce its official decision on Monday. The players lead by Doha Asian Games gold medalist Antonio Gabica were asked to present a written explanation why they joined the qualifying tournament for the 3rd leg of Guinness 9-Ball Tour at the Star Paper Billiards Hall in Quezon City. The Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines and the Star Paper of Sebastian Chua organized the Guinness qualifier but did not seek permit from the GAB despite the agency’s constant reminder to do so. Other players facing sanction are Marlon Manalo, Jeff de Luna, Leonardo Andam, Fidel Punzalan, Leonardo Didal, Edgard Acaba, Jericho Banares, Elvis Calasang and Jordan Legaspi. “What GAB’s doing is simply implementing the law. They violated the law and I will be remiss of my duty if I don’t apply what is stated in the rules,” said Buhain to a handful of newsmen. But while the GAB’s action may seem harsh, Buhain said the agency was actually lenient in dealing with the sensitive case since he’s sympathy is still with the players. According to the GAB provision, a player proven to have joined a professional tournament that is not sanctioned by the government agency should be suspended for three months. “I think that what BSCP’s doing is unfair for the players, their open defiance of the GAB mandate is costing the players of extra income,” Buhain added. Once a player's licensed is suspended, he will not be allowed to join any tournament locally and will not be given travel permit, which is a requirement in competing in events overseas. The BSCP headed by Ernesto Fajardo and chaired by Yen Makabenta maintained that the association is not answerable to the GAB since the tournaments it staged are for amateurs players. Another BSCP’s contention is that it is under the Philippine Olympic Committee and not the GAB’s.

GAMES and Amusement Board (GAB) chairman Eric Buhain is watching in amusement the series of antics of the officials of the Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines (BSCP).
“I don’t know what they were up to. The GAB policy is just as simple as elementary mathematics – you want to hold a professional tournament, no problem but submit proper documents and secure permit – period.”
“Magkakaroon lang naman ng problema kung hindi natin susundin ang batas. There’s an existing law but they (BSCP) don’t what to follow the rules. We in the GAB had no option but to insist out mandate,” said Buhain in yesterday’s media briefing at the GAB office in Makati City .
